12 hours in Venice – Italy

Hello my lovelies, can we just put a round of applause for the travel section as I am finally dusting the cobwebs off and telling you about my day trip to Venice hehe.

It was an early flight with Ryanair and boy I almost missed it even though I got to the airport early just because I got on the wrong airport train shuttle (Note to self: follow this signs and ask for directions to double check you are going the right way hehe).  I went with 9 other people so it was a group trip which I really enjoy and some of them are pro at traveling and that made me newbie-ish felt safe.

We got to Marco Polo airport which is 30 minutes I think out of Venice city center and we all took a coach which was 11 Euros for return but instead of us taking a water bus we all decided to save money and walk using google maps to Venice city center and the 40 minutes walk turned to 2 hours walk to get into Venice. The amazing thing was we were able to see more of the city, take photos, etc and I would highly recommend it; just bear in mind that your feet might hurt a bit.

We crossed loads of really pretty bridges on our “adventure”, walk through loads of tiny “street corners”, saw beautiful courtyards, etc to the city center. Here is the list of places I saw after having lunch and yes you guess right – who doesn’t love Spaghetti Bolognese hehe;

Rialto Bridge

On our way to the square, we passed the Rialto Bridge which is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy according to Wikipedia. It was packed with tourist on it but we manage to take cute photos here and it looks stunning hehe.

St. Mark’s Square

This is a public square of Venice, which is also known as la Piazza (“the Square”). The square is an extension of the Piazza towards the lagoon in its southeast corner – according to Wikipedia. In this square there are;

There is a church called St Mark’s Basilica. According to Wikipedia, the four horses which preside over the whole piazza and are such potent symbols of the pride and power of Venice that the Genoese in 1379 said that there could be no peace between the two cities until these horses had been bridled; four hundred years later, Napoleon, after he had conquered Venice, had them taken down and shipped to Paris. To answer your question; No I did not go inside as churches are not my thing hehe but the architecture of the building is spectacular from the outside.

St Mark’s Campanile is the bell tower of St Mark’s Basilica it is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. The tower is 98.6 meters tall, and stands alone in a corner of St Mark’s Square, near the front of the basilica, according to Wikipedia. I paid 8 Euros to go up the Tower which is 98.6 meters tall using a lift but there is an option to take the stairs if you are interested in the exercise. The view at the top is spectacular and I will highly recommend you do it but the one down thing was you have to put money in the telescope which I think is just plain stupid.

The Doge’s Palace which was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Venetian Republic, opening as a museum in 1923 according to Wikipedia. We didn’t go in either but walked around the shops and cafes and let me tell you they are freaking expensive how come a tea is 12 Euros like seriously!!

Saint Mark Basilica

This is the most famous Roman Catholic Archdiocese cathedral church in northern Italy which is the best known for its Italo-Byzantine architecture.  This was the last place we went which was about 35 minutes walk from St Marks square which we did in the rain. It was closed when we got there but we did manage to take a few photos before the rain for harder.

Libreria Acqua Alta

We also went to the “famous bookstore” which is just full of books everywhere they even have a bathtub full of books as well and few resident cats. One thing we learn was if you need a book you write it down and stick it on the a corner wall which they check often so when your book arrives or is found they call you and send it to you which I think is very sweet.

 After seeing all this and more, we took the water bus at what they call Tronchetto terminal from St Marks square to somewhere closer to the coach station and then hop on the coach to the airport. Did you know that we did not pay for the water bus, haha well they did not ask for a ticket so we just went with the ride haha. If you would like to see my YouTube mini vlog of my trip Click Here.

  2. Wow Venice looks incredible. Im am dying to visit Italy. It’s such a shame how Venice is changing and less locals are living there now. I really want to visit before it is just tourists and no true culture.

  9. I read your post on Bath then went in to see more posts and grinned when I saw this post.

    I came from Venice a year ago and on insta I did a throwback post and so i might be very eager as I type 😂😂

    You didn’t miss out of visiting St Marks Basilica, I went in and was quick to see the exit. Nothing special tbh and St Marks campanille views >>>>
    If you think €12 for tea is a lot then you’re lucky you didn’t drink coffee 😂😂 I’ve read posts where tourists have bought €40+ for a small coffee!! Extortion but ayy 😂
